The Indian Drug Regulatory Authority has banned the sale of ‘Viagra or similar sexual enhancement drugs’ in some of its medicines and banned a number of them for sale.
A team of officials from the Department of Drugs and Healthcare in Delhi said the banned drugs were marketed for erectile dysfunction treatment.
“They are not for sale in most cases. They are for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and have been marketed as Viagra. The ban has now been stopped and there is no evidence of the drug being sold in the market. We are glad that the Indian Drug Regulatory Authority has allowed the ban,” said the senior officer of the agency in a statement.
“The department has asked the Government to ensure that these banned drugs are used appropriately. They are not for sale in most cases. The ban has now been stopped, and there is no evidence that the drug has been used by those who purchase it.”
The anti-impotence drug sildenafil and its generic equivalent, Viagra, were among the banned drugs, while the impotence drug tadalafil and its generic version, Cialis, were not, said the senior officer.
A list of the banned drugs was released on March 28, and officials from the state’s health ministry said the drugs were sold as “Viagra” or similar sexual enhancement drugs. There was also a notice posted on the website.
The drug regulator said that it was against the sale of the banned drugs because they were sold for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and had not been approved by the ministry.
“The drug is being marketed in the United States as well as globally, and we are taking an active step to ensure that it is available,” it said.
The drug regulator added that the ban was also not being used by those who buy Viagra, Cialis and tadalafil from a pharmacy.
The department said that there were no reports of the banned drugs being used in the market. The drug regulator said that the drugs were being sold in the US as well.
“The ban has been withdrawn. These drugs are being sold for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and have been marketed as Viagra. The drug has been marketed as a Viagra and not as a prescription drug and the ban has now been stopped,” the department said in the notification.
